Working Together for Economic Justice

The United States is the wealthiest and most powerful nation in human history, yet we refuse to guarantee the basic necessities of life to all people in our land of plenty. In the midst of an extraordinary explosion of wealth and technological breakthroughs, tens of millions of Americans feel deeply insecure about their jobs, their ability to influence the political and economic decisions that affect their lives, and the well-being of their families, children, elderly parents and their communities. This situation is degrading to the human spirit, unnecessary and contrary to our shared vision of a just and compassionate society.

In response to this situation, we have come together to create a living wage movement that will help restore a more genuine economic and political democracy that meets the legitimate needs of our society.

Our living wage movement is rooted in our national ideals that all people should have protected authentic political and economic rights and opportunities that allow them to share in the resources in our community. Our movement is a social and economic justice movement based on three fundamental convictions:

  • The Right to Organize
  • Promoting upward mobility opportunities for all
  • Creating a Just and Compassionate Society that leaves no one behind

Everyone has the right and the opportunity to work at a livable wage with the assurance of economic security in their retirement years. Those unable to work also have a right to an income sufficient to meet their basic needs.

All people have a right to quality health care.

All children have the right to the education and training necessary to afford them the opportunity to earn a livable wage.

Workers have a right to needed re-education, training and re-employment assistance when their jobs are lost as a result of downsizing, the movement of jobs to lower-wage markets, new technology, or reasons related to industrial injury or illness.

Workers have a right to the assurance that our children and our elders are safe and well cared for while we work.

All people have a right to safe, affordable housing.

All people have a right to affordable and accessible transportation.

All people are entitled to full civil rights and protection from discrimination based on race, gender, religious belief, country of origin or sexual orientation.

Workers have the right to join democratic organizations whose goals are to promote the economic, social and cultural interests of working people.

Principles of Unity - Living Wage Goals

What is a Living Wage Movement?

Our partnership seeks to draw together a broad movement of organizations and individuals who are working on issues that fit under our broad definition of a living wage movement. We want to create a movement that includes many organizations and coalitions that are fighting for a broad vision of justice and social equity.

Together we can overcome.
