2) Call Today for Children's Health

The Senate Finance Committee will gather soon to determine the fate of health care for millions of kids in this country.

The upcoming hearings will determine the content of the SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) bill that will go to the Senate floor later this summer. The deliberations will affect millions of American children as Senators write and revise critical aspects of the bill.

Senators will return from recess on June 4th and need to hear from as many of their constituents as possible.  Every Senator has a voice in the process.  Senator Cantwell is particularly important because she sits on the Finance Committee.

Please call your Senators at 1-800-828-0498 and tell them the importance of SCHIP for America's kids and the need to fully fund it!

What should you say?

Background
Earlier this year, the Washington State legislature passed historic legislation designed to cover all kids by 2010.  Realizing this goal is dependent on a strong reauthorization of of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in Congress..

The Bush budget would have gutted SCHIP funding, but thanks to the hard work of millions of activists around the country, the House and Senate budgeted $50 billion NEW dollars for children's health. Now we have to make sure Congress follows through on this promise.

More than 9 million children in America are uninsured and can't get access to the regular checkups and care every child needs. The SCHIP bill before Congress can change that and make a world of difference for millions of kids!

3) Clear the Path to Citizenship

On Monday, June 4 the Senate returns from recess to begin debate on S. 1348, the comprehensive immigration reform bill.  More than 100 amendments have been filed, and a couple dozen may be voted on.  This alert focuses on just some of those amendments that could have the greatest impact on the debate next week.  More will come.  For further information, contact Rich Stolz at rstolz@communitychange.org.

Support Families & Civil Liberties

  • The Clinton-Hagel Amendment (SA 1183) to ensure that the spouses and children of legal permanent immigrants can immigrate into the United States to be with their family members.
  • The Menendez-Hagel Amendment (SA 1194) to ensure that the majority of all family backlogs already in line to become legal permanent residents will get addressed. The current bill would essentially toss all applications filed after May 2005.
  • The Obama-Menendez Amendment (SA 1202) to sunset the point system after five years.  The Senate never had the opportunity to debate the system out in the open; the result is a proposal that would gut family-sponsored immigration.
  • The Lieberman Amendment (SA 1191) to improve treatment of immigrants seeking asylum and to establish clear standards for treatment of immigrants in detention.

Oppose Attacks on Civil Liberties and Immigrants

  • The Cornyn Amendment (SA 1184) that would further erode the civil liberties of immigrants.
  • The Cornyn Amendment (SA 1250) that would gut confidentiality protections for legalization applicants.
  • The Allard Amendment (SA 1189) that would undermine access to green cards for legalized immigrants.

Call your Senators – 1-800-417-7666

and give them an earful as they return to Congress.
