In this Washington CAN! e-newsletter, you will find:
This
month our state's Health Coverage for All Kids law went into
effect, and already a critical component is threatened by the White House.
Please contact your members of Congress today and
encourage them to continue their bipartisan support of this popular
children's health program. Take action now to ensure that reauthorization
of SCHIP works for kids in

President Bush is trying to
put the squeeze on children's health care. Instead of building on the
enormously successful SCHIP program,
President Bush is threatening to veto bipartisan legislation that would renew
and expand access to health care for kids. Click on the link below to
tell your Senators and Representatives not to leave children behind.

What's At Stake?
Since its authorization in 1997, SCHIP has received strong bipartisan support
and the program has successfully reduced the number of uninsured children.
However SCHIP will expire in September if Congress and the President don't act
now to reauthorize it and provide the funding needed.
SCHIP provides much needed health insurance coverage to millions of uninsured
children. Many of these children come from working families that cannot afford
the high insurance premiums offered by their parent's employer.
A strong SCHIP reauthorization must include $50 billion in new funding over 5
years in order to maintain current coverage levels and reach out to the
estimated six million children who are currently eligible, but not yet enrolled
in either SCHIP or Medicaid.
Current law denies lawful immigrant children eligibility for SCHIP and
Medicaid for five years. This unfair exclusion contributes to the growing
disparity in health outcomes between children of color, and white
children. Providing health coverage for these children is a smart
investment. SCHIP reauthorization should remove the
"five-year-bar" that prevents kids from getting health care.
Congress will be debating reauthorization in both the House and Senate
in the
next few weeks, so now is the time to act. Send a letter your
Senator and
your Representative today and tell them to support a strong
reauthorization with $50 billion in new funding, and removing
barriers to eligibility.
