Statement from the Washington Community Action Network

Seattle, WA- Last night, Senator Barack Obama became the first community organizer to be elected President of the United States. It was the culmination of years of hard work by thousands of dedicated community organizers.

Organizers and grassroots leaders registered millions of new voters and got them to the polls in record numbers. They not only demanded change, but by bringing people together they made change. The skills of person-to-person voter mobilization and the values of uniting for the common good are the essence of community organizing.

In Washington State, grassroots organizing led to record-breaking voter participation. Community organizers and grassroots leaders with Washington CAN! made over 310,000 phone calls, and knocked on over 70,000 doors, registering new voters and getting out the vote.

Sandy Llamas, a sixteen-year-old student, has spent the last months going door-to-door in immigrant communities in Seattle’s Eastside suburbs, encouraging civic participation. She wants to see more people of color involved in the political process. “People of color aren’t included, and they should be. They are important. I want everybody who can vote to vote, and fight for those who can’t.”

For community organizers, Election Day marks the beginning of that fight. Washington CAN’s grassroots leaders will continue to press the President, Governor and all federal, state and local elected officials to pass policies that reflect our community values.
