On June 26th 2003, Governor Locke signed the Prescription Drug Bill, SB 6088, into law. This bill provides low- and moderate-income seniors and people with disabilities access to lower cost prescription drugs. The bill, sponsored by Senator Alex Deccio from Yakima, allows the State of Washington to save considerable money by pooling all the prescription drug purchasing it does.
In 2003 Washington Citizen Action had already been fighting for prescription drug relief for three years. Since 2000 we spearheaded the drive, organizing the Prescription for Action coalition. Our grassroots members continued to fight every step of the way, with rallies, phone calls, letters, and lobbying visits both in Olympia and in districts across the state, leading to a landslide vote to pass the Prescription Drug Bill.
