On January 29th, the US Senate reauthorized the State Children's Health Insurance Program by a vote of 66-32. The bill will provide critical health care to 11 million children. President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law immediately.

In addition to reauthorizing the existing program, the legislation removes a five year waiting period for legally documented immigrant children to receive health care. Senators Cantwell and Murray deserve our thanks for fighting off anti-immigrant amendments as the bill was passed.

This is the first victory of the year in Washington CAN’s campaigns for health care for everyone and immigrant rights. This victory would not have been possible without the support and action of our members. So, thank you.

Next, the Senate will take on President Obama's economic recovery plan, which was passed by the House the other day. That bill includes billions of dollars in investments for health care.

Unfortunately, a little publicized amendment was snuck into the House bill that would be harmful to businesses and workers. This amendment would require businesses receiving money from the stimulus package to investigate their employees’ eligibility to work in the US through the use of a national database called “E-Verify.”

The “E-Verify” database is riddled with errors, costs businesses money, and has been documented to promote workplace discrimination.

Please email Senators Cantwell and Murray and ask them to remove the E-verify provision when they take up the stimulus bill.
