Victory! Proposed Cuts To The Basic Health Plan Are Defeated
Defending the Basic Health Plan
WashingtonCAN is committed to making sure our basic safety-net programs are preserved. We are thankful to our allied organizations and supportive legislators for working to maintain the Basic Health Plan, or BHP. This program will remain a strong resource for neediest Washingtonians, providing health care services to over 100,000 residents.
At risk of losing 40,000 enrollment spots in the program, activists around Washington spoke out opposing pushing more individuals into the ranks of the uninsured. With the number of uninsured individuals approaching one million Washington residents, the state faces severe costs of uncompensated care in emergency rooms and the moral dilemma of an ailing population.
Despite the financial stress facing the legislature this year, the state bucked the trend and rejected the proposal to cut enrollment in the Basic Health Plan.
Thanks to members of our state legislature for making health care a priority!
