Victory! WashingtonCAN Helps Expand Health Care Coverage For Kids
Covering Kids
Thurston County WashingtonCAN member Angel Edwards-Torres joins family and activists in Olympia at a children’s health rally.
WashingtonCAN joined the state’s leading child care advocate, the Children’s Alliance, to win the most significant expansion of health care coverage this year: a $13.5 million appropriation to provide health care coverage for children. This victory means 20,000 children currently ineligible for Medicaid and other state programs will have the health care they need to live full and active lives.
Studies have shown that children who lack adequate health care, including preventative medicine, tend to perform poorly in school and have a higher drop-out rate. This program is a good step in warranting 20,000 children a better chance in life.
The new program covers kids in families with incomes at 100% or less of the federal poverty line, ensuring that the neediest kids in Washington will get the healthcare they need. The program was placed in statute with the passage of SHB 1441, which was signed by the Governor May 4th.
