Healthcare is not a privilege or commodity; we organize to secure healthcare as a fundamental right for everyone. While the Affordable Care Act has led to thousands of people receiving coverage, many still struggle to afford care in a system controlled by hospitals, insurance, and pharmaceutical conglomerates. It’s time for Washington to lead the way in creating a healthcare system that prioritizes our health over corporate profits. Under our current healthcare system, medical treatment is often out of reach for Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities,  immigrants (especially non-citizens), people with disabilities, and other marginalized communities. Thousands of people throughout our state struggle with insurmountable medical debt, avoid doctors out of fear of steep bills and die too soon from preventable diseases. We need to adopt a universal healthcare system now.

In a universal health care system:

Health care will be financed to benefit patients. Everyone pays into a system that is managed by one entity. Instead of lining the pockets of health industry executives or funding their advertising, our money goes where it should: toward our health care.

We all participate in the decisions that affect our health. Single-payer takes power from insurance companies and puts it in our hands and the hands of our democratically elected representatives. No longer will insurance companies decide how much we pay for health care services and which services we can receive.

Everyone has access to quality health care. A universal healthcare system guarantees universal coverage. There are no more financial barriers. The lack of financial obstacles promotes equality and equity in our healthcare system. Everyone has a fair shot at being healthy.

We will have freedom of choice in our health care. There will no longer be doctor’s offices that won’t take your insurance. You can choose which doctor you see or which hospital you attend.
