Housing justice advocates call on the state to lift the ban on rent regulation

More than 60 people marched on the Washington Convention Center Dec. 5 where the landlord lobby was meeting and demanded rent regulation.

Washington's ban on rent regulation stymies tenants' abilities to enact common-sense local laws that protect residents from substandard living conditions and other mistreatment.

At the rally, Rep. Nicole Macri announced she was proposing legislation that would end the state's ban on rent regulation.

Macri's proposal would ensure the landlord lobby couldn't use the ban in their lawsuits against local tenant protection ordinances like the move-in fee legislation Seattle passed in Dec. 2016, under pressure from Washington CAN! members.
