Field Canvasser Job Position

WashingtonCAN is seeking motivated individuals and people to join our Field Organizing Team. Field Organizers serve a vital role on the front lines forefront of today’s progressive fights change, and build skills fundamental to a career in community organizing and advocacy. and organizer experience is key to anyone seeking a career in politics.

WashingtonCAN is a grassroots community with over 30,000 members in WA State, and as an organization specializes in direct door-to-door community contact on behalf of progressive causes. WashingtonCAN is currently working on several issue based campaigns: Universal Healthcare, Mass Liberation (re-frame of mass incarceration), Housing Justice, and further democratizing our institutions, legal processes, boards, laws, etc. In 2022-2023 Field Organizers will have the opportunity to work on several progressive and community-centered initiatives as well.

Position Description:

Field Organizers canvass, develop, and engage people where they are: at their door, in their community. They are often the first touch people have with our organization, and thus convey information to new and existing members about our mission, vision, values, and overall ongoing work on issues like Healthcare, Mass Liberation, Housing, Reproductive Justice, and Gender, Racial, Economic Justice. The Field Team's operations motivate and empower new and current members to become more involved in creating political change in our communities together.

The primary responsibilities of this job position include recruiting new members at the door, fundraising, updating them on current campaigns and issues areas, activating members to get more deeply involved/volunteer. During election time, you will to do Get Out The Vote work and signature-gathering for ballot initiatives if required

Desired Qualifications:

  • A commitment to fighting for racial, gender, and economic justice.

  • Experience in community or labor organizing is desired, but not required.

  • Ability to develop and implement goals based on grassroots strategies and tactics.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, committed to helping others.

  • Ability to work outside in various weather condition

  • Be open to work in an environment where diversity based on race, nationality, gender, age, sexual orientation and physical ability is an important value.

  • Speaking a second language is appreciated but not required. Desired languages include Spanish, Somali, Arabic, Russian, Punjabi, and Vietnamese.

  • Self-motivated, resourceful, creativity and problem solving skills.

  • Effective communication and active listening skills.

  • Values self-improvement, able to accept praise and constructive criticism while implementing feedback and evaluation.

  • Canvassing experience, volunteer experience, work with grassroots politics, campaigns/elections, voter registration or working in communities of color are preferred but not required.  

  • Good time management and the ability to work under pressure.

The Field Organizer position is full-time or part-time with a competitive annual pay of 44,720 to 46,800 plus bonus incentives,, health and dental coverage after 90 days, 401(k) pension plan, and paid holiday, vacation, and sick leave. .
