Location: Washington State (Position requires regular travel and some in-person fieldwork; flexible home base)

Salary Range: $48,880 – $57,200 annually, depending on experience

Washington Community Action Network (WashingtonCAN) is the largest grassroots community organization in Washington State. We build grassroots power to improve the lives of low-income people, people of color, immigrants, and other historically excluded communities. Our organizing spans housing justice, healthcare access, immigrant rights, criminal legal reform, and progressive revenue. We center leadership from people directly impacted by the issues and believe in organizing that builds lasting power.

Job Summary

WashingtonCAN is seeking a full-time Community Organizer to expand our base of members, develop grassroots leaders, do direct voter engagement at the door,  and run powerful issue campaigns that win material change and build long-term political power. This position will focus on field organizing, leadership development, event turnout, and mobilization in key communities across Washington State. Organizers work closely with members and coalition partners to drive legislative and local campaigns, hold public actions, and strengthen our statewide network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct door-to-door and street-based outreach, phonebanking, canvassing, and community events to recruit new members

  • Build relationships with members through regular 1-on-1 meetings and small group gatherings

  • Identify, develop, and support member leaders to take active roles in campaign strategy, media, lobbying, and public actions

  • Help design and implement local and statewide campaigns in areas such as housing, healthcare, immigrant justice, and mass liberation

  • Collaborate with other staff and coalition partners to coordinate field efforts and escalate pressure when needed

  • Track outreach data, participation, and follow-up using internal systems (EveryAction, ThruTalk, etc.)

  • Represent WashingtonCAN in public settings, coalition spaces, at tabling events, and with elected officials

  • Participate in organizational meetings, trainings, and strategy development

  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Organizing Manager and Organizing Director

Qualifications

Required

  • At least some grassroots or community organizing experience (volunteer or paid)

  • Deep commitment to racial and economic justice and to building power with working-class and impacted communities

  • Strong people skills, with the ability to build trust and motivate action

  • Comfortable with door-to-door and street-level outreach, phone calls, and public speaking

  • Basic digital skills (Google Workspace, CRM systems, social media)

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently with accountability

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends

  • Access to reliable transportation for field work and events

Preferred

  • Bilingual or multilingual (especially Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, or a language used in your local area)

  • Lived experience with any of the issues we organize around

  • Familiarity with EveryAction, VAN, ThruTalk, or similar tools

  • Experience organizing in rural communities

Work Arrangement

This position is full-time and requires a mix of in-person and remote work. Organizers are expected to conduct fieldwork in their assigned region and participate in periodic in-person meetings and statewide gatherings. Applicants based in King County, Pierce County, Yakima, Spokane, or the Tri-Cities are especially encouraged to apply.

Extra details:

After 90 days, Washington CAN offers medical/vision and dental insurance to employees (and their families), 401k retirement plan and up to 11 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees will receive up to 6.7 hours of vacation and up to 4.3 hours of sick leave every month.
