Stand Up to Keep Corruption Out of City Hall!
Seattle’s Ethics Code that prevents elected officials from voting on issues where they have a personal financial stake is under direct attack.
Tomorrow, Thursday, May 22nd, the Governance, Accountability, and Economic Development Committee is voting on a proposal that would allow Councilmembers to vote on legislation even when they have a direct financial interest in the outcome.
Let’s be clear: that’s not ethics reform, it’s ethics erosion.
The loudest cheerleaders for this rollback? The same politicians who’ve had to recuse themselves from votes because of personal conflicts. Instead of honoring the system, they want to rewrite the rules to benefit themselves. But we’re not letting this happen quietly.
We’re proud to stand with Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck, who spoke out forcefully against this betrayal of public trust:
“Our democracy is fragile. This is not the moment we should be weakening our code of ethics.”
Alexis isn’t just saying what’s right—she’s doing what’s right. She’s helping shine a spotlight on a shameful move that would put private gain above public interest.
Now it’s our turn. Send a message to City Council today. Demand they vote NO on this attempt to legalize self-dealing. Demand better.
